SUMMARY:Residential Electrification in the Real World: Navigating Panels and Permits
DESCRIPTION:California and local governments have ambitious building decarbonization goals. Translating those goals into real world conditions will be necessary for success. This forum will explore several hurdles to residential electrification\, including electrical panels and building permits\, and ways to overcome them. Join us to learn more about how to tell when an electrical panel needs to be upsized\, options for electrifying on existing panels\, and how building permits and zoning codes may be modified to remove barriers for heat pumps. Understanding these issues can help jurisdictions streamline options for residential decarbonization\, reducing costs and challenges for staff and residents alike. This online Forum is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Easy Electrification for Your Beloved Home
DESCRIPTION:It can be easy and fast to electrify your home if you choose strategies that don’t include rewiring\, and particularly if you avoid a “service upgrade\,” which takes months and thousands of dollars to get a new\, thicker electrical wire from the utility. In fact\, in most cases\, it is not actually necessary to upgrade the panel since the existing one likely has the needed capacity to handle efficient right sized electrification. Using thoughtful electrification processes and cutting-edge appliances and supporting equipment\, most residential electrification can be accomplished successfully with the existing 100A (100 Amp\, 24 kilowatt) panel. The speakers will discuss the best practices\, techniques\, and technologies available today to accomplish electrification without the expensive and time-consuming task of upgrading existing electrical panels. \n\nSpeakers: \n  \n \n  \nSean Armstrong is the Managing Principal of Redwood Energy and led the design of more than half the all-electric residences built in California between 2011 and 2020 on the strength of the CUAC\, co-authored six practical guides to building electrification\, provided legal and technical support to dozens of municipal gas bans nation-wide\, helped develop the 2016\, 2019 and 2022 Title 24 California Energy Code\, and received Grand Prizes from the U.N. and PCBC Gold Nuggets\, two U.S. Department of Energy Innovation Awards\, a SoCal BIA Award\, and is a 2022 California Energy Commission Clean Energy Champion.
