SUMMARY:ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS FOR BACKUP POWER
DESCRIPTION:While there are economic incentives for grid-interactive customers who combine PV generation with energy storage\, customers when polled\, said that their primary motivation for using PV and battery systems is robust\, 24/7 backup power on demand. \nNationally\, extended utility disruptions caused by floods\, landslides\, wind storms\, ice storms\, geomagnetic solar storms\, hurricanes\, tornados\, wildfires\, public safety power shutoff (PSPS)\, earthquakes\, aged infrastructure\, replacement equipment shortages and deliberate sabotage\, populate the news with alarming frequency and severity. Which battery-based backup systems truly deliver\, meet and exceed customers’ expectations during long-term utility power outages? \nThis class promises to address how variously-scaled PV production and battery energy storage systems coupled with smart\, nimble\, robust and locally-controlled load management can respond to the ever increasing challenges threatening to shoot out the lights. In this class\, Erik Frye will discuss experiences of owners of micro grids and battery based grid tied PV systems\, including systems such as: \n\nTesla PowerWall\nEnphase Ensemble\nSolarEdge\nSol-Ark\nLFP vs NMC vs NCA\nSMA Sunny Island\nNon export / Net Zero self generation to meet self consumption with the added benefit of back up power\nStand alone micro grids for entirely off grid applications\nPG&E meter base automatic transfer switch\nFuture projections

SUMMARY:Batteries: Options And Implementation For Building’s Energy Storage System
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re interested in resiliency and cost savings for a home or simply meeting energy codes for new construction\, understanding battery storage is increasingly important for the building industry. In this course\, we’ll go over battery types\, what’s currently available and what’s on the horizon\, how to size a battery for code compliance or other goals\, and what to look for in implementation. \nLearning objectives: \n\nUnderstand different battery types and their applications for buildings\nKnow the process for sizing batteries and when they are required\nReview cost implications for battery use when paired with on-site renewable energy\nUnderstand practical integration of batteries into project design and construction\n\nInstructors: Jennifer Rennick and Grant Murphy\, In Balance Green Consulting
