SUMMARY:Case Studies and Implementation for Advanced HVAC Decarbonization
DESCRIPTION:By enrolling in this course\, you agree to receive text message course reminders. To opt-out update your profile here or upon receiving your first message you will have the option to opt out by replying “STOP”. \nWith the emerging trend towards fully electrified buildings\, plus the demands from a growing IT sector\, utilities and building portfolio managers are facing growing peak demands while also seeking solutions towards decarbonization and grid resilience. This session features three emerging HVAC strategies\, with detailed case studies that can move these ideas from research to implementation. \nCarlos Duarte will present a recently published simulation study exploring how radiant cooling systems can reduce strain on the grid during peak demand hours\, evaluating numerous parameters such as the scheduling of system operation to optimize for climates. With simulations of 16 climate zones in California\, plus 14 additional climates\, these results can inform optimization for load shifting in radiant systems. \nJiwon Park will discuss a case study of an all-electric medical office building that implemented heat recovery chillers to reduce emissions\, providing a higher coefficient of performance than air-to-water heat pumps\, with a smaller equipment footprint. Results show the technical feasibility of these systems\, but also their complexity and variability\, with a proposed new metric for assessing performance in such systems. \nFinally\, Tharanga Jayarathne will describe the field implementation and validation of a novel control strategy that optimizes supply air temperature resent. Recent implementations in three commercial buildings demonstrate its potential as a cost-effective and scalable control strategy\, with energy or cost savings up to 20%. This event is free and open to the public\, and co-sponsored by PG&E and UC Berkeley’s Center for the Built Environment.

SUMMARY:Practical and Efficient Hot Water Delivery: Meeting Hot Water Demand with Heat Pump Water Heaters
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: On average Californians consume less water than the residents of other states. Even so there is a need for us to conserve even more water. The construction community has an opportunity to further reduce residential water use in ways that do not feel like conservation to customers. In this class\, Dan Perunko of Balance Point Home Performance looks at changing the way hot water is stored and delivered to the tap in residential buildings. The theory behind our approach is called “Structured Plumbing”. This will be a practical class focusing on how to install or modify hot water plumbing following the principles of “Structured Plumbing”. The presentation is based on completed projects including retrofits and new construction. \n\nAgenda:\n\n\nIntroduction and safety message\nOverview of structured plumbing design\nMaterial choices and water flow\nPump options\nTypical plumbing layout vs the ideal plumbing layout\nAdvantages and limitations of retrofit plumbing projects\nCase study projects – three examples\nReview as found plumbing layout\nDesign options and install techniques\nDiscuss missed opportunities\nExamine performance of completed system\n\n\n\n\nObjectives:\n\nThe objective of this course is that at the conclusion\, participants will be able to: \n\nConvey the importance of water conservation measures that do not negatively impact the homeowner’s comfort\nCite the annual volume of water a typical household can save by adopting structured plumbing\nDiscuss how reducing pipe diameter decreases the wait time for hot water at a fixture\nPresent strategies for installing a structured plumbing system in an existing home\nPractice evaluating existing plumbing layouts to decide if existing pipe should be reused or rerouted\nSummarize the best options for locating hot water tanks and recirculation pumps with different floor plans\nList the material choices available for replumbing hot water systems (each material will be evaluated for its impact on water flow and velocity)\nArticulate and synthesize how each component and process involved in electrical upgrades directly impacts the electrical efficiency and overall electrical performance of a house. This includes optimizing energy conversion efficiency\, reducing losses\, and improving the reliability and stability of the electrical infrastructure\n\n\n\n\nAudience Level:\nIntermediate\n\n\n\nContinuing Education Credits:\n\nSee below \n\n\n\nAIA\n2.5\n\n\n\nBPI\n3\n\n\n\nCABEC\n3\n\n\n\nHBX\n3\n\n\n\nSector:\nResidential

SUMMARY:Electrify Efficiently: Overcoming Heat Pump Objections (Part 1 of 5)
DESCRIPTION:Heat Pumps are quickly gaining traction as a preferred HVAC and water heating technology. California has a goal for six million installed heat pumps by 2030\, and state plans indicate that new gas furnace and water heaters will not be permitted after 2030. While the path forward for heat pumps seems clear\, the technology is still foreign to most homeowners. To meet the above-mentioned goals\, contractors and other industry professionals must arm themselves with the knowledge (and sometimes the data) to dispel myths about heat pumps. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll hear from Larry Waters\, an HVAC industry veteran who switched his focus towards home performance in 2010 and towards inverter heat pumps in 2014. With over 400 heat pump installations under his belt\, Larry’s heard just about every objection in the book and will relay best practices for responding to such objections.

SUMMARY:ACCA Manual D Part 2: Duct Design with Wrightsoft (Part 3 of 3)
DESCRIPTION:Course description\n\n\n\n\n\nPart 3 of 3  \nThis full day webinar reviews the basic principles involved in designing residential duct work. The Wrightsoft floor plan developed on day one in Wrightsoft is used in this duct design session. The set-up of Wrightsoft to match best practices is covered and a portion of the presentation is a practical session demonstrating the process of selecting registers. A sample register schedule is reviewed and explained. The session begins with a brief review of the elements discussed on the previous two days. As the session progresses the equipment that was selected on day one is input into the Wrightsoft program. Design external static pressure is input\, as well as the pressure drops from registers\, grilles\, balancing dampers and filters. The effect of filters on airflow and static pressure is discussed and the importance of designing larger returns and deeper filter boxes is explained and illustrated. The attendee inputs their practice sketch into Wrightsoft and one of the student’s design is reviewed along with the friction rates and duct sizes. As the day progresses more advanced issues are covered such as entering second floors\, vaulted ceilings\, cantilever floors are included in the Wrightsoft exercise. Attendees are encouraged to have their downloaded handouts ready and available from previous sessions to review the various charts and tables required in the design process. \nAgenda: \n\nWrightsoft setup for duct design\nAirflow and static pressure considerations\nRegister selection and scheduling\nHands-on practice: design input\nDesign review and optimization\nAdvanced design scenarios\n\nThe objective of this course is that at the conclusion\, participants will be able to:   \n\nConfigure Wrightsoft software for accurate residential duct design following industry best practices\nInput equipment\, airflow requirements\, and system pressure components into Wrightsoft to model duct system performance\nEvaluate the impact of filters\, grilles\, registers\, and dampers on static pressure and airflow\nDesign and optimize return air systems\, including proper sizing and filter box configuration for improved efficiency\nApply register selection principles and develop a register schedule based on airflow and comfort requirements\nInput and analyze duct design layouts in Wrightsoft\, including validation of friction rates and duct sizing\nDesign for advanced residential scenarios such as multi-story homes\, vaulted ceilings\, and cantilevered floors while maintaining comfort and code compliance\n\nContinuing Education Credits: \nCABEC: 6\, NATE: 6
