SUMMARY:Optimizing Ducted Heat Pumps for Residential Electrification: Efficiency Comfort and Low Loss Duct Systems
DESCRIPTION:Improved design\, installation and commissioning practices lead to a dramatic improvement in building energy consumption\, indoor air quality\, and comfort. There are six performance factors that can be applied to HVAC design\, installation and/or commissioning. In the Optimizing Residential Forced-Air series\, we will review how each factor can be specified at design\, implemented during installation\, and tested/adjusted during commissioning. We will also look at how we can redesign our approach to high performance HVAC systems to support CA climate goals\, help manage the peak electrical load on the grid as well as the owners operating cost under the time-of-use billing structure. \nThe Optimizing Residential Forced-Air series is informed through commissioned systems\, where real examples from completed projects are used to support class content. We have designed\, built\, and commissioned both retrofit and new construction projects that exemplify the concepts covered in class. Course content will include design examples\, photos installations\, and test results from commissioning. \nThe HVAC equipment\, materials and knowledge required to dramatically improve the performance of HVAC systems is readily available. This class will assist the designer\, installer\, and rater in their efforts to improve the HVAC systems we build.

SUMMARY:Energy Management Systems (EMS) with HVAC Controls (2 Part Series)
DESCRIPTION:Series Description\n\n\n\n\n\nPart 1 of 2 – September 23\, 2025 (9:30am – 11:30am) \nPart 2 of 2 – September 24\, 2025 (9:30am – 11:30am) \n\n\n\n\n\nGetting the most energy savings out of your HVAC requires building systems to be capable of adjustment\, such as variable speed drives or demand limiting\, as opposed to simple on/off control. However\, these strategies often add a higher level of complexity making it more challenging to keep persistent energy savings over time. Energy Management Systems and Analytics are often offered as a solution to this problem. This course will provide a deep dive exploration of the reality of energy management systems and how they are not a one-size-fits all system and how each one needs its own requirements and parameters for success. \n  \nThe objective of this course is that at the conclusion\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify key differences between building management systems (BMS) and energy management systems (EMS)\nReview fundamental EMS qualities\, controls\, and techniques appropriate for different users\, audiences\, and end goals\nExplore key performance indicators and strategies dashboard configurations\nEvaluate effective EMS implementation\, current product availability and successful case studies in new and retrofit projects\n\n  \nSpeaker Bio:  \nLester Terrance\, HVAC/R \nLester Terrance has been active in the HVAC industry since 2003\, including 12 years in the United State Air Force\, seven of those years serving as HVAC Field Supervisor at the US Department of State. He is a licensed Master HVAC in the states of Maryland and Virginia\, an EPA Certified Universal Technician\, and an Authorized Overseas Certified Technician (Multi-stack). Lester is an HVAC Instructor and subject matter expert at D+R LEARN. SUMMARY:Advanced Concepts in Designing and Retrofitting Energy Efficient Data Centers
DESCRIPTION:Course description\n\n\n\n\n\nThe class will focus on how to select\, design\, control\, and commission the mechanical systems with the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) for a given data center. TCO accounts for first cost (including electrical\, architectural and structural impacts)\, reliability\, complexity/simplicity\, energy efficiency\, maintenance costs\, future growth\, and flexibility. The class will make liberal use of real data center case studies for both new construction and retrofits. Mechanical systems evaluated will include packaged/custom direct expansion (DX) with air economizers\, direct/indirect evaporative cooling\, pumped refrigerant economizers\, various chilled water systems including in-row cooling and waterside economizers\, air-cooled chillers with integrated dry-coolers\, liquid cooled racks\, and liquid cooled servers. One area of focus will be controls design and commissioning. This section will cover both Direct Digital Control (DDC) and Programable Logic Controller (PLC) systems\, various controls redundancy options\, failsafe device configuration\, optimizing/simplifying sequences of operation\, and controls commissioning. The class will also review the ASHRAE TC9.9 Thermal Guidelines and other standards of care for control of temperature\, humidity\, gaseous contaminants\, and particulates. Lastly\, the class will cover the growing use of data center heat recovery for building electrification. This is an advanced level course for owners\, operators\, engineers\, contractors\, colocation tenants\, etc. with at least two years of data center experience.

SUMMARY:Making a High Quality Home Electrification Plan
DESCRIPTION:This course introduces the ingredients of a good electrification plan and shows participants how to produce one. Trainers will start by demonstrating how to gather critical data from a home\, including utility data\, key photos\, measurements and homeowner preferences. Next\, participants will learn how to use that data\, combined with load calculations (covered in the previous class)\, to select the best equipment for each end use in a home. Finally\, trainers will show how to pull all of the pieces together into a set of actionable reports that homeowners can use to guide them on their electrification journeys. SUMMARY:Introduction to Heating and Cooling Load Calculations for Electrification Projects
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Judy Rachel will explain what a heating/cooling load calculation is and how it provides essential information for the successful implementation of electrification projects. Beyond providing the essential information for properly sizing a residence’s HVAC system\, the heating / cooling load calculation informs electrification project design and planning in significant ways. In addition\, this presentation will explore the business case for this important planning step within the construction process. \nAccurately calculating the heating and cooling loads for a building provides the information necessary to choose appropriately sized space conditioning equipment. Right-sizing HVAC equipment provides a significant advantage in electrification projects. When pursuing electrification using right-sized\, typically\, lower capacity HVAC equipment you will frequently negate the need for panel upgrades. This contributes significantly to reducing project costs\, while saving on energy consumption and ongoing costs to comfortably condition a given home.

SUMMARY:Energy Storage Systems for Backup Power
DESCRIPTION:Course description\n\n\n\n\n\nBy enrolling in this course\, you agree to receive text message course reminders. Upon receiving your first message you will have the option to opt out by replying “STOP”. \nWhile there are economic incentives for grid-interactive customers who combine PV generation with energy storage\, customers when polled\, said that their primary motivation for using PV and batteries systems is robust\, 24/7 backup power on demand. \nNationally\, extended utility disruptions caused by floods\, landslides\, wind storms\, ice storms\, geomagnetic solar storms\, hurricanes\, tornados\, wildfires\, PSPS\, earthquakes\, aged infrastructure\, replacement equipment shortages and deliberate sabotage\, populate the news with alarming frequency and severity. SUMMARY:Electrify Efficiently: Overcoming Heat Pump Objections (Part 1 of 5)
DESCRIPTION:Heat Pumps are quickly gaining traction as a preferred HVAC and water heating technology. California has a goal for 6 million installed heat pumps by 2030\, and state plans indicate that new gas furnace and water heaters will not be permitted after 2030. While the path forward for heat pumps seems clear\, the technology is still foreign to most homeowners. To meet the above-mentioned goals\, contractors and other industry professionals must arm themselves with the knowledge (and sometimes the data) to dispel myths about heat pumps. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll hear from Larry Waters\, an HVAC industry veteran who switched his focus towards home performance in 2010 and towards inverter heat pumps in 2014. With over 400 heat pump installations under his belt\, Larry’s heard just about every objection in the book and will relay best practices for responding to such objections.
