SUMMARY:Optimizing Residential Forced-Air HVAC Systems: Load Calculations\, Equipment Selection\, System Airflow and Layout
DESCRIPTION:Improved design\, installation and commissioning practices lead to a dramatic improvement in building energy consumption\, indoor air quality\, and comfort. There are six performance factors that can be applied to HVAC design\, installation and/or commissioning. In the Optimizing Residential Forced-Air series\, we will review how each factor can be specified at design\, implemented during installation\, and tested/adjusted during commissioning. We will also look at how we can redesign our approach to high performance HVAC systems to support California climate goals\, help manage the peak electrical load on the grid as well as the owners operating cost under the time-of-use billing structure. \nThe Optimizing Residential Forced-Air series is informed through commissioned systems\, where real examples from completed projects are used to support class content. Dan Perunko of Balance Point Home Performance has designed\, built\, and commissioned both retrofit and new construction projects that exemplify the concepts covered in class. Course content will include design examples\, photos installations\, and test results from commissioning. \nThe HVAC equipment\, materials and knowledge required to dramatically improve the performance of HVAC systems is readily available. This class will assist the designer\, installer\, and rater in their efforts to improve the HVAC systems we build.

SUMMARY:How to Electrify Your Home – Planning Considerations
DESCRIPTION:Homeowners around the world are beginning to embrace electrification (the switch from gas-fired to electric-powered appliances). When done correctly\, home electrification brings a plethora of benefits including better air quality\, improved comfort\, lower environmental footprint\, and in many cases quieter operation. \nThe path to going all-electric can take many forms. For some\, this means upgrading one appliance at a time; for others\, it means replacing them all at once and offsetting with on-site solar. Regardless of the timeline\, there are some important planning steps that must take place\, as well as a continual vision for optimizing efficiency. Special attention should be paid to electrical panel optimization\, appliance location\, and considerations for maximizing efficiency.

SUMMARY:Getting Past Heat Pump Objections
DESCRIPTION:Heat Pumps are quickly gaining traction as a preferred HVAC and water heating technology\, but many customers and contractors are unfamiliar with heat pumps or remain skeptical. In order to meet California’s ambitious heat pump goals (6 million by 2030)\, contractors and other industry professionals must arm themselves with the knowledge (and sometimes the data) to dispel myths about heat pumps.  In this webinar\, you’ll hear from Larry Waters\, an HVAC industry veteran who switched his focus towards home performance in 2010 and towards inverter heat pumps in 2014. With over 400 heat pump installations under his belt\, Larry’s heard just about every objection in the book and will relay best practices for responding to such objections.

SUMMARY:Home Electrification Planning – Class 1: Soup to Nuts
DESCRIPTION:As California makes the transition to electrification\, careful planning will be crucial for existing buildings. This three-part series will cover the importance of electrification planning\, how to optimize existing electrical capacity to avoid costly and often unnecessary panel upgrades\, selecting the most efficient equipment that will keep homeowners comfortable and happy\, and putting together a comprehensive\, detailed\, and customized plan that will set homeowners and contractors up for success. The best way to achieve a desired outcome is to create a plan for getting there. This first webinar of the series will focus on what an electrification plan is\, why it is important\, and how it is done. It will also cover two methods for calculating heating loads to properly size a HVAC system.

SUMMARY:Cost-Effective Approaches for Energy Efficient Remodels
DESCRIPTION:There are 82 million detached single-family homes in the US\, and according to the US Energy Information Administration\, there are 6.8 million in California. The average cost of energy in US households is about $2\,060 per year according to Energy Star with nearly half of that money going to heating and cooling. The average home also adds 7.5 tons of greenhouse gasses each year. Steve Easley will draw upon his building science consulting experience to illustrate the most cost-effective\, best practices measures to reduce energy use in the home. Steve prioritizes the energy-saving decisions and explains the best products and practices for insulation\, windows\, water heating\, lighting\, and HVAC system.

Most comfort problems are related to design issues and can be easily diagnosed using basic design principles and simple diagnostic tools. \nThis class will cover the most common comfort complaints\, the diagnostic tests\, how to interpret the results and how to use industry standard design principles to suggest solutions. \nLearning objectives: \nUnderstanding the most common symptoms of comfort problems vs. equipment problems \nUnderstanding how to use design principles (load calculations\, equipment selection\, duct design) do diagnose and resolve problems \nUnderstand the various diagnostic tests that can be used to pinpoint and quantify problems and how to interpret the results. \nSpeaker: Russell King\, M.E. is a professional mechanical engineer licensed in California\, Nevada\, and Hawaii. He has over 30 years of experience in the areas of HVAC design\, diagnostics and consulting\, as well as energy code compliance\, Home Energy Rating System (HERS) verification and consulting. He has taught professional level training on all these topics.

SUMMARY:Passive House Series: Passive House in California
DESCRIPTION:Our final class in this series will bring this home to cover the evolution of Passive House design here in California. We’ll review up to four specific projects located in Northern California\, including a Sacramento project. Details for each project will be shared to gain an understanding for how this approach varies across our local climate zones\, and how Passive House may be cost-effectively implemented in our region. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how the Passive House approach works in our region and climate.

SUMMARY:Optimizing Residential Forced-Air HVAC Systems: Efficiency Comfort and Low Loss Duct Systems
We will also look at how we can redesign our approach to high performance HVAC systems to support CA climate goals\, help manage the peak electrical load on the grid as well as the owners operating cost under the time-of-use billing structure.

SUMMARY:Multifamily Electrification 101
DESCRIPTION:Building electrification is advancing quickly with over 40 California jurisdictions adopting reach codes to advance electrification\, which is critical to meet our local and state goals. In this class\, we will discuss the benefits of electrification and the current policy and code considerations\, provide an overview of what should be considered in an all-electric multifamily project (both new and retrofit)\, and explore technologies for electrification for all end uses\, as well as the role of solar PV and electric vehicles. Come learn about what it takes to have a successful retrofit or new construction multifamily electrification project.

SUMMARY:Improving Home Indoor Air Quality and Best Practices for Kitchen Ventilation - NOW ALSO ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:Steve Easley uses real world pictures and graphics to sort through the myriad of system choices to help you design and select the most cost-effective system to meet code and beyond. This class explains why properly ventilated\, well-insulated\, tighter\, homes have better indoor air quality (IAQ) and fewer moisture problems\, perform better\, last longer and are healthier to live in than the typically insulated\, “accidentally ventilated” home.
