SUMMARY:Air Sealing New and Retrofit Construction
DESCRIPTION:Designing and constructing airtight houses and buildings allows for projects that need less heating and cooling. As a result\, it is less costly to attain zero carbon as proper air sealing saves energy and results in smaller mechanical equipment. Achieving super airtight assemblies is about the correct mind set as well as proper protocol and materials. This class will allow you to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to achieve your project’s air sealing goals. Terry Nordbye will demonstrate step by step procedures and materials to air seal a new construction house\, including Passive House\, to virtually any airtightness and achieve deep reductions in retrofit work. You will be shown all steps from planning to construction and learn why\, where\, and when to air seal.

SUMMARY:Right-Sizing Plumbing in Homes and Apartment Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Description: Effective July 1\, 2024\, the Appendix M\, Peak Water Demand Calculator (WDC) became part of the California Plumbing Code. Instead of using flow rates and flush volumes from the 1940s\, the WDC will allow you to “right-size” the cold and hot water distribution systems in homes and apartment buildings using modern information about flow rates and simultaneous use. Does this sound like a snoozer? Actually\, it is an environmentally responsible solution that can save energy\, time\, money\, and water. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nShare the results of the study used to support the petition for the adoption proceeding\nProvide an overview of how to use Appendix M in single-family and multi-family projects\nProvide case studies that show how using the WDC can save $500-$1\,000 per apartment in first costs\nIdentify and enable connection with members of the Passive House community who want to learn how to use the WDC in their upcoming projects\n\nPresenter: \nGary Klein of Gary Klein and Associates (garykleinassociates.com)

SUMMARY:Energy Efficiency Policy Forum
DESCRIPTION:Forum Overview\nACEEE’s 2024 Energy Efficiency Policy Forum will bring together a diverse group of speakers from across government\, industry\, and advocacy groups to discuss opportunities and challenges for energy efficiency policy at the dawn of a new presidential term and the 119th Congress. \nThe Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law have started to put the largest federal investments in energy efficiency in U.S. history to work. We will look at successes and challenges in the rollout of these funds and at lessons about how to improve these programs. We also know that these bills were not enough to meet the needs for transformative change to address the climate crisis. \nAt the same time\, efficiency policies and programs are increasingly under attack by opponents with a political philosophy that shuns spending and regulation for any purpose. We will look at whether the results of the 2024 election bolster an effort to use current programs as a springboard for real climate action or require a full-throated defense of energy efficiency’s benefits. \nThe 2024 Energy Efficiency Policy Forum will gather stakeholders from the federal government\, states\, industry\, the environmental movement\, and affected communities to share lessons learned from the past few years\, and how we can bring even greater benefits of energy efficiency to the American people. \nWe tentatively plan two keynote speakers and three sessions focused on: \n\nBuildings – combining efficiency and electrification in existing buildings\nIndustry – spurring transformation to decarbonize key industries\nTransportation – the role of electric vehicles in efficient transportation systems\n\nRegistration to open September 10\, 2024. \nRegistration Rates \n\nEarly Bird: $245 (register by 11/1/24) \nRegular: $300 (after 11/1/24)

SUMMARY:Practical Efficient Hot Water Delivery: Structured Plumbing Applied in Retrofit and New Construction
DESCRIPTION:On the average Californians consume less water than the residents of other states. Even so there is a need for us to conserve even more water. The construction community has an opportunity to further reduce residential water use in ways that do not feel like conservation to our customers. In this class\, Dan Perunko of Balance Point Home Performance looks at changing the way hot water is stored and delivered to the tap in residential buildings. The theory behind our approach is called “Structured Plumbing”. This will be a practical class focusing on how to install or modify hot water plumbing following the principles of “Structured Plumbing”. The presentation is based on completed projects including retrofits and new construction.
