SUMMARY:Advanced Concepts in Designing and Retrofitting Energy Efficient Data Centers
DESCRIPTION:Course description\n\n\n\n\n\nThe class will focus on how to select\, design\, control\, and commission the mechanical systems with the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) for a given data center. TCO accounts for first cost (including electrical\, architectural and structural impacts)\, reliability\, complexity/simplicity\, energy efficiency\, maintenance costs\, future growth\, and flexibility. The class will make liberal use of real data center case studies for both new construction and retrofits. Mechanical systems evaluated will include packaged/custom direct expansion (DX) with air economizers\, direct/indirect evaporative cooling\, pumped refrigerant economizers\, various chilled water systems including in-row cooling and waterside economizers\, air-cooled chillers with integrated dry-coolers\, liquid cooled racks\, and liquid cooled servers. One area of focus will be controls design and commissioning. This section will cover both Direct Digital Control (DDC) and Programable Logic Controller (PLC) systems\, various controls redundancy options\, failsafe device configuration\, optimizing/simplifying sequences of operation\, and controls commissioning. The class will also review the ASHRAE TC9.9 Thermal Guidelines and other standards of care for control of temperature\, humidity\, gaseous contaminants\, and particulates. Lastly\, the class will cover the growing use of data center heat recovery for building electrification. This is an advanced level course for owners\, operators\, engineers\, contractors\, colocation tenants\, etc. with at least two years of data center experience.

SUMMARY:All Electric Retrofit with Electric Panel Constraints
DESCRIPTION:Event Description \nThe building industry will need to electrify buildings at a fast pace if cities and counties are to meet their goals for reducing Carbon emissions. One of the obstacles commonly cited for keeping status quo gas systems in place is limited space in the electric panel serving the building. We will cover how electric panels are sized according to the electrical code and demonstrate tools to double-check those calculations. Options for making existing electric panels work will be covered\, including circuit sharing devices\, innovative solutions for HVAC\, clothes washing\, hot water\, cooking\, EV charging\, PV and battery systems. Often the existing electrical panel is adequate for a fully electric home\, and we will equip attendees with the knowledge to evaluate this key decision for themselves. \nLearning Objectives \n\nLearn and apply tools to calculate electric panel size according to the electrical code\nOptions for electrifying with limited electric panel space and service\nExplore real-world case studies to better understand the challenges and solutions

SUMMARY:Electrify Efficiently: Electrification Opportunities for Plumbers
DESCRIPTION:Course description\n\n\n\n\n\nBy enrolling in this course\, you agree to receive text message course reminders. Upon receiving your first message you will have the option to opt out by replying “STOP”. \nElectrification is taking form in California – gas water heaters are being phased out in the Bay Area by 2027 and over 70 municipalities have policies phasing out gas appliances. The massive transition from gas to electric will “spark” giant demand for all trades\, including plumbers. In this session\, Electrify My Home will introduce unique business opportunities for plumbers with a focus on heat pump water heaters\, strategies for collaborating with other trades (e.g.\, electricians)\, and the importance of comprehensive electrification planning. \nThe U.S. Department of Energy has recognized this course as part of PG&E Energy Center’s Heat Pump Water Heater program as Energy Skilled in Installation. Energy Skilled heat pump water heater programs include important content to prepare students to install and specify high quality\, next generation heat pump water heater systems. Enroll here to complete the three-part series to receive your Energy Skilled recognition. \nAgenda: \n\nIntroduction and safety message\nElectrification market in California and PG&E service territory\nGas water heater phase out\nElectrification opportunities in California\nHeat pump water heaters and the electrical grid\n\nThe objective of this course is that at the conclusion\, participants will be able to: \n\nSummarize importance of Electrify My Home’s approach to ‘good electrification’\nName at least two factors driving the market for electric water heaters\nDescribe one feature of gas water heaters that’s lead to their phase-out.\nBe aware of the percentage of California homes with a gas water heater\nExplain why heat pump water heaters can be helpful for the electrical grid
