A3 Highly Flammable Refrigerants: Applications and Safe Handling
As the industry transitions away from high GWP refrigerants toward more sustainable alternatives, hydrocarbons, classified as A3 refrigerants, are being reintroduced into a wide range of residential and commercial applications. While these refrigerants offer clear environmental advantages, their high flammability demands specialized training, awareness, and procedures.
This course was developed to serve as an instructional resource for working with A3 hydrocarbon refrigerants such as propane (R-290) and isobutane (R-600a). It combines essential background knowledge with step-by-step safety practices, guided by the latest codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
Upon completing this training, HVACR professionals are encouraged to take the A3 Refrigerant Certification exam. The A3 Refrigerants: Hydrocarbon Refrigerant Safety examination validates that a person possesses the knowledge to safely work with A3 refrigerants and helps reduce liability.
The 50 question, closed-book exam covers the following competencies:
- General flammable refrigerant safety knowledge
- Core air conditioning and refrigerant ACR knowledge
- Flammable system service safety
- Flammable system installation safety
- Flammable refrigerant transportation and handling safety
- The preparation booklet and the certification exam are offered at no cost
Certification Exam Information:
- To be eligible to take the no cost proctored certification exam you are required to attend A3 Highly Flammable Refrigerants: Applications and Safe Handling
- The certification exam will be administered online on Thursday, June 25, 2026 (9am – 11am) PST
- A complimentary e-book will be provided to attendees who complete the training and are interested in taking the certification exam
If you are not ready to take the exam in June, this training is still a great opportunity to learn about A3 refrigerants.
