I-REN C&S Training: Prepare for Permitting: Natural Refrigerant Heat Pumps

October 27, 2026
I-REN is hosting a learning session in partnership with ProspectSV to share more about what is driving adoption of natural refrigerant heat pumps for HVAC and DHW uses, outline how current codes apply to this technology, and how to navigate that landscape as it develops. The HVAC industry is in the midst of a technology transition. Electrification and the phasedown of synthetic (HFC) refrigerants are driving natural refrigerant heat pumps, using refrigerants such as CO₂ and R-290 (propane), further into use for commercial HVAC and domestic hot water (DHW) applications, and California’s climate goals are accelerating that shift. As this technology becomes more common, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) – building officials, fire marshals, and other local permitting authorities responsible for code compliance – will need a clear framework for evaluating these systems.

The session will cover the following:

  • Current landscape for natural refrigerants in HVAC
  • Benefits and limitations of natural refrigerant systems
  • Relevant codes and code application
  • Safety considerations
  • What to ask for at permit review
  • Resources and where to go for support

ICC CEUs: 0.1 CEUs (pending)

Instructors: Shannon Allison and Matthew Dehghani, Alter Engineers
